> My Views on Generative AI
As a Computer Science student, I should be excited by all this new technology. Machine learning is cool, and AI has been making technology better for many years now (e.g. image recognition). Being able to ask a computer something in natural language, and have it produce some meaningful output is genuinely pretty cool.
However, I can't help but feel disappointed with the state of things. Image and video generation means faking things is easier than ever, not to mention removes the creative aspect of producing this content. Vibe coding means that the internet is flooded with low quality, unmaintainable software. And a rise in LLM use means AI 'slop' is everywhere.
I for sure dislike image, video and audio generation. I can understand why I dislike this. However, my views on AI use for assisting programming are changing as time goes on. I don't like the idea that an AI could write an entire codebase it's unmaintainable and takes away the human aspect of it. However, AI tools used to complete lines of code, autocomplete and other small tasks, I don't see too much issue with this.
I become more conflicted as time goes on. Right now, I avoid using AI tools, however keeping this stance is likely to become less preferable over time. Employers aren't necesarilly looking for people who are explicitly anti-AI, if anything they're going to want to see people who are willing to use their AI tools. And the CS student in me sees something cool about the idea of hosting a local model on my computer, for example.
Embrace human-made art and other work, appreciate the thought and effort that goes into it, and maybe learn a thing or two yourself instead of asking an LLM to do everything for you. And if you're gonna use an LLM, use it to learn.

Everything I produce so far is made without the use of generative AI for any step of the process. I don't see this changing significantly any time soon.
